Year 1/2 - Pine

Maple, Pine & Willow Weekly Update - Friday 18th January

Workshop funds: We are still collecting contributions for our workshop last week. We would be very grateful for any remaining donations.

Headlice: Headlice are an issue in the school at the moment so please check your child’s hair. Please also remember to re-treat if headlice are found because treating once does not get rid of all the eggs that may have been laid.

English: The children have been reading different recounts of the Great Fire of London, including diaries of Samuel Pepys and Thomas Farriner. The children also re-wrote a recount to improve it by using conjunctions (joining words) and different sentence openers.

Maths: Year 1 children have been comparing and ordering numbers to 50 and Year 2 children have been tackling a range of number-related investigations. All the children have been practising recognising the multiplication sign and have started to use this to solve simple number sentences.

Maths homework: In our mental maths this week, the children started to think about doubles and halves. For their homework this week, please could Year 1 children practise doubling numbers up to 10? Some Year 2 children would benefit from doing this as well but they are expected to double numbers up to 20. They often find doubling teen numbers challenging. Drawing pictures, using objects or doubling on their fingers is a good way of getting children to work out the answers before they have remembered these number facts.

Reading and spellings: Please continue reading with your child at least five times a week. Children who do this will get a sticker in their reading log. New spellings were given this week in preparation for their spelling quiz next Friday.

Thank you,

Miss Willey, Mr Seldon and Miss Smith
