Year 1 Weekly Update

Friday 17th September

Dear Parents/Carers,

We started the week, and our superhero topic, with a morning full of superhero fun on Monday. The children all completed four superhero activities. Please have a look at Mrs Simpson’s newsletter to see some photos. Thank you for the brilliant superhero costumes, please keep them handy as we may want to use them again in a few weeks’ time!

This week we have been reading the story ‘Supertato’ and have created our own vegetable villain wanted posters.

In maths, the children have been sorting objects in different ways and counting groups of objects.

Thank you to all of the parents who attended the phonics information meeting on Tuesday. If you weren’t able to make it then please have a read through the PowerPoint slides saved on the Year 1 webpage below.

In Year 1, we ask that you complete the following homework with your child each week.

  • 5 x reading
  • 3 x NumBots (maths game)
  • Spellings practice

Please see the letter on the webpage below for more information about NumBots. Your child’s login details are stuck inside the back cover of their yellow reading log. This is ready for you to access now, and we will be showing the children more about this in school next week.

We are hoping to start spellings soon. It has been decided that we will send home purple exercise books to use for spellings instead of using Google Classroom as we had originally said.

  • Children should only have water in their water bottles please, no juice.
  • Please remember to clearly name your child’s clothing/possessions, especially jumpers. It is much easier for us to return them to the right person if they are named.
  • It seems that a named cardigan and named fleece have gone missing this week, perhaps picked up by mistake. Can you please check at home to make sure that your child hasn’t bought home someone else’s clothing? Thank you.

Google Classroom

Your passwords have now been set.

This week, please ensure you can logon at home and see your new class on Google Classroom.

Everyone did a great job of setting these up last year in the lockdown, and nothing has changed! Remember, Google Classroom can be accessed from any device.

Your child has the same username and password as last year, but here is a reminder.

Go to ‘Google Classroom’ and login.

Every child’s login starts with a number. Your child’s number is 21

This is followed by their name and first letter of their surname and then everyone has the same end part. For example:

John Smith would be

Some pupils do have a slight variation – most of the pupils do know their log ins.

Password: Stratton (capital S)

IMPORTANT - The account we are using is separate from ANY home google accounts. You will need to ‘add an account’ on your home login page and put in your child’s login if you haven’t already done so. They will then see their classroom they belong to in school.

IMPORTANT – the stream (the first option at the top of the screen) is for education messages only - if a child is posting inappropriate chat on there, they will be muted and not allowed to put anything on there.

NB: You are only allowed to log on to your own account.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team

NumBots (Maths homework)

Isolation home learning - Day 1

Here are some activities for your child to complete on their first day of isolation.

Please only do this with your child if they are well enough to do so. If your child needs to isolate for longer then we will be in touch with further learning activities to complete at home. Thank you!

  • Reading – Please listen to your child read, and also read a story to your child.
  • Revise your phonics flashcards. Challenge your child to read some words that you make, and then to make some words too.
  • Complete 5-10 minutes of playing on NumBots.
  • Practice this week's spellings.
  • Play a board game together.
  • Get some fresh air and exercise by playing in the garden, or complete some physical activity inside (eg Joe Wicks/cosmic yoga/just dance)
