Maple, Pine & Willow Weekly Update – 19th July
English: This week, the children wrote their own stories based on ‘Lila and the Secret of Rain’.
Maths: In maths this week, the children have been practising their problem solving skills.
Forest School: Now that we have finished learning about Kenya, we will be teaching the children in the forest school all next week. The children will need to come to school dressed in sensible forest school clothing. This should include: leggings/lightweight trousers or longer shorts if it’s hot (shorts that are significantly above the knee are not acceptable), t-shirts or lightweight long-sleeved tops (strappy tops are not acceptable) and trainers. Wellies are not necessary unless it is very wet (we are hoping it won’t be!). The children do not need to bring a change of clothing.
Reading and writing over the holidays: The children have now returned their school books to the book boxes. We still expect them to read regularly over the holidays; if they stop reading, they find it very difficult when they return in September and many children slip behind if they haven’t kept up with regular reading. The library in Bude has hundreds of lovely books to choose from and the summer reading challenge provides children with an excellent chance to practise their reading.
We also strongly recommend that the children practise writing a few sentences a few times a week over the holidays (perhaps in a holiday diary) as a way of continuing the writing skills they have learnt. This can help children to ‘hit the ground running’ when they return in September.
Parents’ message: On Wednesday 24th July straight after school there will be an end of term ‘get together’ arranged by some of the parents of the children in Maple, Pine and Willow. They will be meeting on the school field. If you would like to join them, please bring picnic food, a blanket and any garden games you might have. Everyone is welcome!
Spare Clothing: If you have any spare clothing at home that next year’s Year 1 can use (particularly girls’ underwear) as spares, we would be very grateful for the donation.
This will be the last weekly update we post this academic year. Thank you for your support and we hope you have a lovely summer!
