Year 2 and Year 3 Team: Hawthorn, Juniper, Willow

Hawthorn, Juniper and Willow Weekly Update – Friday 13th September

Meet the Teacher: Thank you to everyone who made it to our meet the teacher meetings. If you were unable to attend, you can find a copy of the PowerPoint for your child’s class teacher/s on our class page.

English: This week, we have learnt and acted out ‘The story of Icarus’. The children have created a story map to aid them in retelling the story and have planned a new class version of the story to write next week.

Maths: In Maths this week, the children have been learning how to read, write and represent numbers. Year 2 have been learning how to do this using 2-digit numbers and Year 3 have been using 3-digit numbers.

Homework:

Maths: As discussed in our meet the teacher meeting, all maths homework for the year will be for the children to log in and complete times tables rockstars at least 3 times a week. The children’s log ins can be found at the front of their purple books and the site can be accessed using the following link https://play.ttrockstars.com/. Year 2 may initially find this challenging because they have not yet learnt their times tables. You may wish to practically complete some practise with your child for the 2s, 5s and 10 times tables before starting to use times tables rockstars. For example, this may include, practising to count in 2s, 5s and 10s and counting in multiples to solve the multiplication question. A good website to recall the times tables is https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button.

Spelling: We are not giving out weekly spellings to test this year. Instead, we are asking that children practise spelling 10 common exception words which they are expected to know how to spell for their age, by the end of the year. At the back of your child’s purple book you will find a list of the age related common exception words. The Year 3 spellings are not separated into Year 3 words and Year 4 words. We suggest that you select half of the words to focus on for this year. Your child can complete any spelling homework they do in their purple book.

Homework will be checked on a Friday. Maths homework doesn’t need to be recorded in the purple book because times table rockstars can be tracked online.

Swimming: Swimming starts on Monday for Year 3. Please make sure your child has their swimming things with them and are in school promptly to walk to swimming. We cannot take children swimming without parental consent. We do not need to receive payment before Monday but the consent is vital. Without it, your child will not be able to go swimming. There are still several outstanding consents which need to be collected. Please can you do this as soon as possible if you have not already done so?
