Hawthorn, Juniper and Ash Weekly Update – Friday 25th September
English: We have planned a new scene for ‘Stig of the Dump’ by drawing a comic strip. We thought about the speech for the different characters.
Maths: In Maths this week, the children have revised their knowledge of division and multiplication.
Topic Learning: The children raised questions about images of stone age artefacts and pictures. Next week, we will be researching the answers to some of our questions.
Science: The children described properties of rocks and learnt the meaning of the words: permeable, impermeable, durable and dense.
Relax Kids: This week we began some mindfulness sessions with Sophie from ‘Relax Kids’. These sessions will continue every will until the week after half term.
Please ensure that your child has their book bag in school every day with their yellow reading log, their purple homework book and their reading book.
Maths: Maths homework for the year will be for the children use their log in and complete Times Tables Rockstars at least 3 times a week. The times tables that are set by teachers can be found in the ‘Garage’ game section but there are other games the children can access to practise too. The children’s log ins can be found at the front of their purple books and the site can be accessed using the following link https://play.ttrockstars.com/.
Spellings: The children should now have a set of spellings stuck into their purple homework book. For most children, this will be the Year 3/4 common exception word list. Some children have personalised word lists to suit their current ability. The children also stuck a list of strategies for learning spellings into their purple books. Each week, you should choose a strategy to use and select some words from the list to practise. Try to vary the strategies although one strategy might work better for your child than others!
Accelerated Reader/Reading: The children are now being given their accelerated reader books regularly. Please note that the books we have given out are easier for most children at the moment so that we can allow them to gain confidence in these first few weeks back at school. Once the children have quizzed 5 times at school (and have scored well) we will move them onto the next step within their zone. We reassess children’s zones (ZPDs) each term. We expect each child to read their reading book five times a week. Please record this in the yellow reading log.
Handball Club: Ash class have now finished their handball sessions. Juniper class will be starting their two sessions from next Wednesday.
Homework will be checked on a Friday. Maths homework doesn’t need to be recorded in the purple book because Times Tables Rockstars can be tracked online.
